Every year Shebbear celebrates the turning of the Stone and of course The Devils Stone Inn, from where the name of the pub originates, plays a central part in this ceremony. On November the 5th of every year the villagers of Shebbear prepare to turn the Devils stone which is over 6 feet long and weighs in at over a ton. The stone is not local and no one really knows how it found its way to Shebbear. The bells are rung at the local church in discord at 8pm which signifies the turning which once complete will ensure the safety of the village for yet another year.
The Devils Stone Inn Internal Details
The main entrance is through the front door from then village square. Carpeted stairs rise to the first floor and the hallway, the hallway being a striking slate floor. The slate floor follows through into the restaurant and the main bar area, The main bar area has seating on a traditional mix of tables and chairs for approximately 30 covers. The bar itself is a polished wood bar and features a selection of Ales and lagers with a well laid out back bar and display cabinet. The wood burning stove and stone fireplace is a welcoming feature to all. Off from the bar area is a further two rooms currently used for Pool teams but has the potential to become valuable restaurant area.
Also from the bar there us access to the very well stocked cellar. The Devil's Stone Inn enjoys a reputation of keeping excellent ales. The Cellar has all the normal cooling equipment which would be expected. From here is also an access to outside for easy deliveries. The Pub attracts shooting and fishing parties, both activities of which are readily accessible within the area. There is also ample scope to increase bookings by using the portals such as AirBandB.
